This is the first book of McGrath's stories that I've read, and I enjoyed it. I liked the world the author created, and how the plot revolved around that. It was interesting and yes, world-building. The characters were deep and well-developed, and the story was indeed suspenseful. A new world can mean a second chance at happiness. But sometimes it's just the beginning of a desperate struggle for survival.

Door to Altharia follows the story of young Alec Breen from Western Michigan who, on one strange night, finds his way into a mystical, magical land. Altharia is a land rich in history and conflict, with its own mythologies and religions, races and wars, magic and wonder. But it is a world about to be plunged into darkness – that is, unless.
